Subject: Archives Box Set

Hi everyone--

I just got off the phone with a very close friend of mine, who's in the music biz. He was talking to Howie Klein, who runs Reprise Records and Mr. Klein told him he is going to NY's ranch this weekend to hear the first Archives box set. He said it contains eighteen (18) unreleased tracks and will be a four cd set with a bonus fifth disc. This is to be the first of four such sets. The plan is to release one box set about every year and a half to two years. Should keep NY going into the next decade. Oh yeah, and he added that NY will still be releasing new stuff on a regular basis.

Best always,
mad louie

Subject: MORE BARN! in Harpers Magazine

The March issue of Harpers (available third week of Feb) will carry a short article (I don't know HOW short) on the MORE BARN! incident at the Broken Arrow ranch. Probably won't be anything more than we already know, but it'll be interesting to see it in a "mainstream" magazine. The article will be in the Readings section of the mag (up front).

Friday night was the opening show for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at the Fillmore in SF. Great show (obviously) but Saturday night was definitely better. Petty's playing 20 sold out shows. The Fillmore holds 1100. Tom says "the band just wants to play and have fun!" This is his first appearance at the Fillmore.

Where is the Neil content? Saturday night, rocking out with the best of 'em: Neil! Really a treat to watch an artist admire another!! No jam session so far, but it would be fun!

Also Saturday night, Huey Lewis and Jerry Harrison movin' about. Jackson Browne was there at Friday's show. David byrne was busy at dinner fri night, anybody see him later at the show?

Subject: Neil at playing at inaugural ball?

Here's an article I saw...

(extracts from) Syracuse Herald-American Jan 12, 1997
by Mark Bialczak

On Jan. 20, Joanne Shenendoah, the Oneida Nation native, plays her music at the Native American Inaugural Ball in Crystal City, Va. -- one of 12 balls that night to celebrate the beginning of President Clinton's second term of office.

"It's exciting," Shenendoah said Friday afternoon. Nevertheless, she admits the blood will pump a little harder if a second appearance on inaugural evening comes through. A duet with folk-rock legend Neil Young at the Arkansas Ball - the nationally televised party thrown by Clinton's home state that also will include performances by Barbra Streisand and Joni Mitchell - has been proposed by the committee heading the bash.

Shenendoah said she hopes to find out if the duet is definite any day now. She's talking to Young on the phonel, but haven't decided what they's play together.

Any thoughts on song choices?? Some obvious ones - Campaigner, Homegrown, Cinnamon Girl??

Subject: Neil Young - Restaurateur?

The following is from today's Music Central Totally Live News:

...little did we know that Beck and Young are pals, having hung out together on a number of occasions and often dining together when Young is in Los Angeles. That's something that Young may be doing quite a bit, if his Lionel Cafe plans get off the drawing boards and into the malls.

We understand Young and a few investors plan to create kid-friendly eateries, complete with his beloved Lionel trains shuttling back and forth.

Hey Neil, the Mall of America needs another restaurant!

In this mornings Calendar section of the L.A. Times, Pop Eye (page 74):

SMALL FACES: Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Cher and Me'Shell Ndegeocello, among others, have donated songs for a Reprise CD that will be available only as part of a book titled The Invisible Homeless, featuring photos of homeless children taken by top fashion photographers. The songs, all previously released, were selected by the musicians as representing themes related to the project, which benefits the Homes for the Homeless organization...
I wonder what Neil's contribution will be? Perhaps Sheila could ask Lookout?

Subject: Bridge release

In the San Francisco Chronical a few weeks ago, there was an article about new Neil releases. Of course, it was mostly a repeat of what we already knew. However, there is one part that was not mentioned on HyperRust. The article says:

According to Reprise Records, the label also has penciled in a live album from Neil Young and Crazy Horse for June. Adding to this proliferation of Young product, the guitarist plans to bring out a Bridge School Benefit compilation on Reprise next year. A source at the label said that Sony Records has a similar plan but that "ours will have Pearl Jam on it."
I saw Lookout Mama's comment that Neil's Bridge album very likely would not include Pearl Jam. The last sentence of the above quote suggests that Pearl Jam will have its own Bridge album. This would be cool. Tom Petty, CSN&Y, Springsteen and a couple others have also played the Bridge enough times to have their own Bridge album. Let's hope they follow suit.

Happy New Years,

Rusties, here's a scoop for you. John Einarson has just completed a book on the Buffalo Springfield. The title is Stop, Hey Whats That Sound: The Buffalo Springfield Story By John Einarson with Richie Furay. He is also doing a cover story in Goldmine magazine on the Springfield for their May 8, 1997 issue in commemoration of their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. The book should be out by then too. I'll keep you posted if I hear any more news on it.

Subject: Neil and Kathy Lee

My wife watched Kathy Lee's remarks about Neil so I'll provide you with a paraphrase...

Kathy Lee was discussing the MS benefit and trying to get grumpy-ol' Regis to guess who performed. She said that typically performers like Tony Bennett perform. Regis tried to guess and then snapped he probably hasn't even heard of the performer. She said it was Neil, and Regis played along (does he really even know who he is? Frightening.)

She also said that she sat next to Neil and Pegi. All the men were wearing tuxes except Neil, of course, who was in plaid. They told Kathy Lee that they have been married for 18 years, and she stated that they still can't keep their hands off each other.

She also stated they they had a child with cerebral palsy.

She said that Neil played Heart of Gold and Sugar Mountain (strange, didn't someone on Rust predict this? Why not Sedan Delivery?   :)

Ah well, things are getting VERY strange when Rusties have to rely on Kathy Lee for setlists for NY concerts!!

My own take on the evening is trying to imagine Neil sitting next to Kathy Lee for an entire evening. What was going on inside of his head?

Just announced on MuchMusic:

On Friday, November 1st, Neil Young will be in the MM studio in Toronto. Fans are invited to email or fax in questions, which the producers will go through and select the best ones to give to Neil. They will also be showing tape from the MM archives. I don't know the time of the show because next week's TV listings are not out yet, so check your TV guide for details. If you have a question for Neil you can send it to the following:

Email Neil: neiltv@muchmusic.com

Rustheads,

I don't know if this is old news or not since I've not yet downloaded my mail.

Tickets are still available for Neil in New York City next Tuesday evening. He is performing at a benefit for MS at the Marriot Marquis. Rumor has it that he got involved with the MS Society through Victoria Williams. Call Stephanie of the society at 212-463-7787 to charge your tickets.

The catch? Yeah, there is one. Tickets start at $500/plate. Neil will be performing during dessert for 5-10 mins.
