Reprise has set up a web site for the new Rickie Lee Jones album Ghostyhead. The Letters & Faxes section of the website apparently has some of Rickie Lee's writings from the road. One is entitled Long letter about Neil Young. She uses NY and Expecting to Fly as a point of departure at the beginning and then shoots off on various tangents, but it is interesting nonetheless.

I just noticed this review of the YOTH film from last Friday on the Reuters/Variety wire. It looks like it was written after the SF Film Festival, but this is the first I've seen of it.

I'm off to get the cd now...

Subject: Neil Says: No Archives!

Here's an excerpt from the NY&CH Interview in Fachblatt Musikmagazin (Germany), July 97:

Neil (grinning): "It's good to have them (the archives) at our disposal. There's constantly something to talk about without having to work for. The archives help to keep the myth. If we'd really release them the myth would be ruined. So it will never happen. The release of the archives would be the most self-destructive step in my career. Believe me."

Subject: Rust in Belgian newspaper

Today, the Belgian newspaper De Standaard ran a three-page article on Neil in their magazine supplement. Mainly just a career overview, with some Belgian artists explaining why Neil matters. More interestingly, the article refers to "Rust, the Neil Young Online Community" as a source for Neil news. It mentions the discussion on Rust about whether Neil is a vegetarian or not, and the rumour that the European tour was cancelled not because of the sandwich incident but because of the extra bucks Neil wanted on top of his fee. According to the article, we've been engaged in a discussion of capitalism, Marx, Bakunin and Marcuse ever since. Ah, the hyperboles of journalese...

Just opened the Sunday paper and to my surprise, a circular for Circuit City had a picture of YOTH with the legend "available Tuesday, June 10th!" Am I correct in thinking the release date is the 17th, or is CC just jumping the gun a bit?

Howdy,
The latest Farm Aid flyer announces rebroadcasts of FA '96 on TNN, on Monday June 30 at 10pm and 2am (EDT); and on Tuesday July 1 at 10pm and 2am (EDT). Neil is a featured performer, but the show will be a "greatest musical moments from the show" rather than a complete rebroadcast. Doesn't say which night(s) Neil will be shown...

Subject: Neil's finger: What Happened

From sources that I consider pretty reliable, it looks like this is the story of what happened (no smileys or anything, this isn't a spoof):

Now I cannot swear this story is true, but my sources claim that it is. And it doesn't seem too contrived. Especially since both the hang-nail and the cut finger reports came out a fair while before the Euro-tour cancellation.

To me, it makes more sense than the various conspiracy theories. "Occam's razor", and all that...

That very same magazine prints YOTH's cover in all it's colours, in a Warner ad. Really beautiful one in a similar rusty vein of previous live albums. And "Neil-writing" featured once again for the titles.

National PBS feed tonight on the satellite (PrimestarM for sure) of Austin City Limits is gonna air at 10:00PM, 2:00AM & 5:00AM a show hosted by John Prine. It's a best of, with Shawn Colvin, Lyle Lovett, Los Lobos, Sheryl Crow, Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Goodman & NEIL YOUNG. I think this is the International Harvesters show. Sounds real interesting to these ears. Since they record more than they air I hope it is outtakes!

The local PBS folks will tape this for airing sometime later in your area if you don't have a satellite.

Just caught Mannix on "TV Land". Yes, there was Buffalo Springfield footage. The scene panned in at a psychedelic bar with the Springfield starting For What It's Worth. Steve Stills up front beginning the opening lyrics with Neil visible in the background. After only a few seconds, the scene went to Mannix confronting Tom Skerrit sitting in the bar. In the background, no vocals, but extended jamming on the song. Soon the climactic fight begins and the music ends. As Mannix leaves the bar, a Buffalo Springfield poster is seen outside. Special music and lyrics are credited to Steve Stills and a special appearance is credited to "Buffalo Springfield."

I taped & watched Friday's episode. Great 60s stuff, but no BS. Then someone posted that it's TONIGHT! What they're doing is pretty neat, too. It's the original CBS lineup of shows, incl My 3 Sons, Hogan's Heroes & Petticoat Junction, shown with original commercials. So we'll try again tonight!

Subject: Neil Young Interview

Just read my evening newspaper (Expressen) and surprisingly enough there was a interview with our man!

It was mainly about the YOTH album and movie, but also about the Archives. What it said about the movie and album has already been mentioned on Rust so I'll skip it.

About the YOTH movie distribution:

"We're making arrangements at the Cannes Festival for distribution and then it will show up in the American theaters this autumn."
About the Archives (it says it will arrive before the year 2000!):
"Yeah, the box will come. I have approximately 45-60 songs that have never been released. They are in my little secret box"
About the Internet (Rust, maybe?):
"Through the Internet, songs that aren't completed can rapidly spread all over the world. That's something I don't want to happen"
And finally about not coming to the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame induction:
"It's agreat honor to get inducted, so it was a hard decision to make."
The Archives before year 2000... Makes you a bit sad, doesn't it? I had hoped a bit earlier.
