The 1996 Favorite Show Poll

A Rust poll conducted by Dave Bolan (be719@freenet.toronto.on.ca)

See the bottom for the lowdown on how I turned the Rustie votes into these ratings. The vote was open to ALL shows in 1996, including the OPL gigs, Farm Aid and the Bridge Benefits. Of those, 49 different shows were seen by those voting.

The September 14 show at the Gorge in George, Washington shared the top spot with the June 4 show at Old Princeton Landing in Princeton By The Sea, California.

Polling Details

I asked Rusties to vote on each show they saw in 1996, rating the show on a scale from -3 to +3. Since I feel that a show voted a +2.9 by 10 people is better than a +3 as voted by one person, I added a diminishing returns factor, as follows:

  • If three or more people voted on a show, that show's rating is the average score of the votes.
  • If only two people rated a show, a half a vote was added to the tally of that show. The value of that half vote is equal to the mean average of all votes for all shows (which came out to about +1.90).
  • If only one person voted for a show, two-thirds of a vote was added to the tally of that show (same +1.90 value).
Simply put, this factor allowed a show with only a single vote to be only 60% as extreme as a show with a three or more vote consensus. And those with only two votes to be 80% as extreme.

I hope you like the ratings, I welcome feedback (but prefer it from Neil's guitar.. :)

Dave
