HORDE at Great Woods
Mansfield, MA, August 10, 1997

mini-review by Jim Memory County Jail C

Just back home from Great Woods II. An interesting song order and two VERY interesting song choices tonight.

As on Friday, there was no afternoon acoustic set by NY, though Billy Talbot and friends did some acoustic tunes just after the doors opened, on the HORDE O'Culture (Workshop) Stage.

NY & CH began their set about one half hour ahead of the scheduled 9:30 start, possibly because they ran overtime last night and Great Woods pulled the plug by turning on the house lights at 11:00 during the encore, which is the curfew time. They finished their encore tonight by 10:30.

An absolutely intense, energized performance, like the previous night. Neil and the boys were ON! Intense (I can't think of a better word right now!), focused singing from Neil. Lots of movement on stage, lots of that close jamming in a huddle, leaning on one another, trading microphones, singing together into a single microphone. NY seemed possessed, as he did last night.

Long jams during Slip Away and Down By the River. Fabulous version of Crime in the City. Great versions of Big Time and Throw Your Hatred Down. Wonderful acoustic Southern Man, sounding delicate and more subtle than that tune usually sounds (but when was the last time we heard it live?). Nice Heart of Gold. Lots of gesturing from Neil at the audience, at the rusties sitting front and center in particular.
The Ordinary People Banner was flown.
