Architecturally, the 2,200-seat Wiltern Theatre probably ranks at the top of the list of Los Angeles' pop music venues. Built in 1931, the former movie theater re-opened in 1985 and oozes history and character. Concert-goers are advised to arrive early when attending Wiltern shows in order to admire its elaborate and gorgeous Art Deco interior. Quality balcony seats are generally preferable to seats situated at the very back of the floor level. Indeed, one of the best vantage points in the house is the middle of the first row in the large balcony section, which hangs over about half of the lower seating area. The Wiltern's offering of pop and rock acts does slow down a bit during the summer when many performers head to the outdoor venues. The Wiltern also presents other types of events from theater and dance performances to jazz and comedy shows.
