Chasing The Moonlight

Brought to you by Cinnamon Girl
(CinmnGirl@aol.com)

Cinnamon Girl has managed to find a few "Record Company" folks who will (under cover of darkness :-) sometimes shed a bit of moonlight on what's going on with Neil and his music.

This page is a log of reports made by Cinnamon Girl to the Rust List, of her contacts with folks in the record companies. Some of the news here may not make a lot of sense when taken out of that context. Subscribe to the Rust List to get ALL of the info...

Subject: Ticket Sales Date for Southern California

I've been told that tickets are supposed to be on sale for the Irvine and Devore dates "the end of July." My contact at Reprise is going to try to get a better date for me. I'll let you know ASAP if it comes through.

Subject: No Neil Interviews for this Concert ... Yet

My rock critic friend has been asking almost daily about the status of his interview request. He also has been talking to other critics to see if any of them have been luckier. No one is being granted an interview with Neil. No one.

Other than that, nothing else to report. As I've told a couple of people already, it appears that Lookout is thwarting everyone on concert confirms. As a matter of fact, my Reprise source and rock critic friend have asked ME for concert dates because the info line is so dry out there right now. Way to go Lookout Mama!

As with Lookout Mama, I'm also being stymied in my efforts to get firm concert dates. As soon as any info is released, it'll be posted immediately.

My sources tell me that Neil and CH will be shooting the video(s) for Broken Arrow at OPL this weekend. Jim Jarmusch is directing ....

Subject: Neil Starts US Tour Aug. 9

Just got off the phone with my Reprise contact. Was told that Neil and Crazy Horse will start playing in the midwest August 9 and tour for five weeks with two opening bands. He's asked Beck to be one of the bands, but no reponse yet. However, so many bands want to play with NY&CH, that it could be anybody. The concerts will ALL be in open-air venues. Sorry, Rusties, my contact said no specific venues have been given yet.

Subject: Powderfinger and Pistols

Talked with a Sex Pistols source who also works with Neil who said there is no talk at all of Young/Pistols dates (though she personally would love to see it). Pistols are here (Southern California) Aug. 22, Neil not till Sept. 11. Plus the Pistols tour is only 4 weeks, so it's unlikely.

Wouldn't you love to see Johnny Rotten taking the "This is the story of Johnny Rotten" lines?

Subject: Broken Arrow Album Preview

I was in L.A. on business today and my rock critic source invited me to stop by his office and listen to the new Neil Young album, Broken Arrow. Of course, I said YES. The album I heard was 45 minutes long. I tried to jot down as many of the lyrics as I could, but I can't vouch for them being accurate. And, I'm not musically gifted, so I can't help you with what notes were what, etc. All I can tell you is that it's ALL unmistakably Neil. No experimenting on this one!

 --> Here are my notes.

Subject: More Stealth Shows?

Heard two rumors, neither have been confirmed, but just in case ...

  1. Neil is returning to the Catalyst this week for a couple of shows.

  2. And he will also be playing at the Warfield in San Francisco the first week of June.

Subject: Info On New Album

From my rock critic source ....

"Just got the new album for review. Neil produced the album himself. Interstate is on it but will be on the vinyl only.

"The version of Baby What You Want Me To Do from the OPL shows sounds exactly like the boot you gave me!"

(CG Note: Yes, I bribe my sources as best I can ...)
"Neil mixed the crowd sounds real loud to make it sound like you're in the audience. Haven't listened to the rest yet.

"Interstate is copyright 1985, as we know, but it says this is from a 1990 recording session with Crazy Horse -- I guess a Ragged Glory outtake.

"Vinyl version is two LPs, with Interstate taking up side 4 (only 6 mins long though).

"Album title is officially Broken Arrow now and release date is back to July 2."

Subject: Neil at OPL Again

I was able to confirm yesterday's rumor with my rock critic and Warner's source, but both were unable to tell me where. When I personally called OPL, they said Sublime was playing that night. Then, today I found out it *was* OPL! When I told this to my sources, they said, "Makes sense. Neil was very adament about NO media at ANY of his shows, so he pulled a fast one on us, too!"

They say he's supposed to be playing tonight, too.

So, did anyone go last night or are going tonight?

Subject: Neil's Playing Again Tonight

Just got confirmation that Neil's playing again tonight and tomorrow night, but where is the big question. It's NOT the Catalyst .... Sublime is playing there. And not OPL ... O.K., No Cal Rusties, time to start dialing up Neil's favorite "old stomping grounds" and ask who's playing. Good luck!

I'll keep you posted if anything else turns up.

Subject: No Album Release Date Yet

Just talked to my Warner's source. They're trying to nail down an official release date and will have it for me by the end of the week. They'll also have the tour scheduled nailed down then, too.

My rock critic contact has asked for an interview with Neil, although there's no promises he'll get it. Any questions you'd like me to forward on for possible inclusion, just in case?

Subject: The 1996 USA Tour is a GO!

Just got off the phone with my Warners source. No official announcement yet, but the US tour is definite and all those "held" dates will become real dates. (You can breathe a sigh of relief now, Austin!) My source doesn't have the concert schedule in front of them, so they only "confirm" my area ... sorry, Rusties! They said to call your local venue that usually holds concerts, talk to the scheduler/administrator and ask if they're saving any dates for Neil (don't forget to ask what those dates are!). If the answer's yes, then you have a VERY good chance of seeing him there. And, please let us know if you get good news!

And, on the So Cal side, it'll probably be one date at Irvine Meadows and one at Blockbuster. Irvine will take whatever date Neil picks. They're holding Sept. 10, 11 and 12 at Irvine for him. So, my source says it'll probably be either Irvine the 10th and Blockbuster the 11th, or Blockbuster the 11th and Irvine the 12th.

Subject: Neil Dates In Southern California

Blockbuster Pavilion is now "definitely" holding Sept. 11 and 12, and the Irvine Amphitheatre is holding at least one date as well, but that was not given to me. Common sense would say it's one side or the other of the Blockbuster dates, tho ... Let's hope Lookout Mgmt is more informative with Lookout Mama this week. Go get 'em, Sheila!

Subject: So Cal Tour Dates?

The Blockbuster dates they're holding for Neil are Sept. 11 and 12 and of course, they are "tentative." Everyone is still "just holding dates." I'm told that not a single date is concretely confirmed - not even the Sept. 5 date in Austin, Texas. I couldn't pry any other venues or dates out of my source because, as Lookout Mama was also told, "they're not even supposed to be giving that info out yet 'cause it's not for sure." However, I was also told "to hold that many dates and then not tour isn't likely! One way or another, expect to see Neil and Crazy Horse late summer after his EuroTour."

With a little luck, Lookout Mama should have some firm dates for us this Friday. And, of course, I'll be pushing my industry sources from this end, too.

Subject: Album hitch?

Here's the latest scoop ... Talked to a real, REAL good Warners source just minutes ago. He says the July 2 date is now definitely problematic because, as of today, they don't have the master tape, no artwork, not even a song listing or album title. He said with all that in hand right this minute, they'd still have to knock themselves out to make July 2. As soon as Neil delivers the goods, he said, he'll have a date for us.

Subject: Responses

To respond to LRR's inquiry, my source said that Neil had the "final" version of the Archives in hand for his approval, but was having way too much fun with Crazy Horse to review/approve them - MAYBE out by Christmas 1997!

Nothing said about tapers ...

I've asked my best industry sources, "Who's producing Neil's new album?" The only answer I received was, "I dunno, I might have guessed Brendan O'Brien in light of his Pearl Jam work, but I know he's not doing it. I just don't know. I'll see if I can find out. But I have heard it's a noisy, hard-rocking album!" Oh yeah? How about giving ol' Cinnamon Girl a listen, hmmmmm? Oh well, I'll continue to ask until an answer floats to the top somewhere, somehow.

Subject: Another OPL Show?

Neil's going to do at least two more at OPL. But he's ordered NO media, NO industry -- even my contact had to sneak in with someone else to the other OPL shows! So, you NoCal Rusties, keep your ears to the ground and your recorders at the ready! It just might happen again ...

Subj: Neil & CH Album Update ...

Latest today from Warners/Reprise source ... they are fully expecting to release the new album late June/early July. It's possible that a track or two will be included from the recent OPL shows. I was told Neil recorded all the OPL shows - no surprise there, since Neil himself has said he records everything he does. Neil may also include Jimmy Reed's Baby What You Want Me To Do on the album. The record company executive I talked to was at the shows and said they were simply amazing ... "Neil at his best. He and Crazy Horse never sounded better - they could do no wrong. He could've played Happy Birthday To You and it would've rocked!"

(A big, heartfelt thanks again to our mystery OPL show taper - can't wait to get my copy!)

I asked if Neil was going to do any more small gigs around town before touring Europe and was told that they (Warners/Reprise) didn't know of any planned right now, but "wouldn't be surprised if Neil decided to do another one or two before hitting the road. He's having a great time with Crazy Horse and they love doing those small shows - really charges 'em up."

I asked again about the U.S. tour and was told it's still a definite possibility and is "tentatively scheduled to start late August or early September with Crazy Horse." I can't get any firm dates or venues out of my source, but I'll keep asking every chance I get.

Subject: Re: Neil Rumors

I called my sources and got the following responses:

  1. Elliott is the final stop before anything goes to Neil. ANYTHING. He reviews everything before Neil sees or hears it. "Neil doesn't want to be bothered by distractions and details and that's what Elliott's for ... managing the distractions and details. Elliott has a very tough job." And, by the way, Elliott is aware of us ...

  2. Everything is tentative with Neil. EVERYTHING. This means that the album scheduled for release in July will, in reality, be released .... ?

  3. "Tentative" includes his concert dates, too. Sure, everyone wants Neil, and not everyone can have him. But, Blockbuster in Devore definitely wants Neil and is trying damn hard to get him and has blocked time for him. They've been given the tentative O.K. by Reprise. (There's that "tentative" word again!) When Neil played the Pacific Amphitheater with Booker T a few years back, it wasn't sold out. He wants to make sure that doesn't happen again, so is being selective with his venues, at least in Southern California. (I was at that concert and there were plenty of grass seats available and even some regular seats.) So, he may only play one show per area to ensure better attendance.

I was also told that Neil gets very pissed off if things leak out prematurely, so that's why it's so hard to get any info, particularly anything concrete. All of the people that work closely for Neil are very protective of him and his record label loves him, so what Neil says goes. Period. Hence, the trickle of information rather than the flood. I'll keep posting it as I hear it but remember, Rusties, ALL info is TENTATIVE and I just post it as I hear it. FYI, my sources are a music reviewer and two well placed executives within Reprise and Warner. I always double check any info I get with one or another of my sources. Dissect the info if you must, but enjoy it nonetheless. It never hurts to hope one tenative morsel of information may turn out to be a nice chunk of reality.

Best,

Subject: Definitely Neil Content! (DNC!)

Reprise has the new Neil Young and CH album scheduled for a July release.

Blockbuster Pavilion (Devore, CA) is definitely holding a date for Neil and CH in September. Start East coast gigs August and work way west ... no dates and no locations were given to me except Devore (probably 'cause I live out here) ... but I was told Neil would be working east to west so "they" could be home in time for annual Bridge concert.

Neil has final version of Archives for his approval in his hands. Is having too much fun making the album with Crazy Horse and planning the summer gigs to even take a look at what Elliott submitted. MAYBE released by Christmas 97. Hates being bugged by people asking when they're going to be released ...says it's overwhelming going over and over all the old stuff looking for the best one, and it'll be done only when he says so. "Ain't going to be forced by nobody."

Yes, a Deadman music video was made. Waiting for Deadman movie to be released in U.S. before releasing video. (The ol' "in conjunction with" marketing campaign ...) Has been released in Europe, though. (And they got to buy Deadman first, too ... sigh.)

This is from two very reliable, separate sources. One gave me the info, the other verified it and gave me more. Source A told me about the possible Blockbuster and Irvine Meadows concert dates that I posted a month or so ago. Lookout Mama asked Lookout if these dates were real at the time and Lookout didn't deny them. Source B verified them then. Now, Source A tells me Blockbuster is verified and the album's out in July. Source B says, yes, and tells me more. So take the above for what's it's worth. For me, I believe it's beginning to look like a good summer ...

Rustin' in the moonlight with a smile on my face,
