Subject: Easter egg hunt is OVER!

Dear all,

I have seen that the Horse is among us, with the great spirit that brings forth MIRACLES! First, it was Locator who PROPHECIED about Neil in 2003! Then, it was the NYAS web page that listed the Euro tour dates ( http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/nyas/europe96.htm), and NOW HEAR THIS!

I got hold of the production manager for the Ruisrock Festival to be held in Turku, Finland in the end of June. I had sent him a fax last week asking for latest info to be distributed for the Rust list about the festival. Today, he told me over the phone that, "unofficially, it looks good, but WE HAVE TO ADD ANOTHER DAY in the festival, June 28, which will be the day Neil and Crazy Horse are able to perform here". Neil has cancelled on them 3 times before, so he is extremely cautious about confirming this until the beginning of May. Tickets will be sold for single days as well, which is fine.

In exchange to this info, I told him about the latest developments regarding Neil's recording activities as heard on Rust.

So, Neil and the Horse move mountains! If we have a speck of faith the size of a mustard seed, we can do the same! In fact, if there was no real fan demand, I doubt any festival would ADD ANOTHER DAY to the program just to get Neil to play.

The Horse will be among us soon! Get ready to boogie! And, meanwhile, in case you have any questions regarding the Ruisrock Festival, please contact me. The web page is: http://www.ttl.fi/ruisrock/eng.html

Subject: San Jose Sharks/Neil

just got back from a Sharks Hockey game and it's the second one since the OPL shows that I've been to and no sign of Neil/Ben (I was hoping to catch Neil/Ben/The Horse kickin' getting rowdy at a hockey game) I asked a few of the people in the area, you know guys that never miss a game and they say he hasn't been there in over a month........ must be working real hard on that album and tour or he escaped back up to Canada. Usually if he's in town and the Sharks are playing he's there (unless of course he's performing)
So I'd say he's real busy with the album, or finished with the album and in LA mixing it, or it didn't work out and he scraped the whole idea and took off to get ready for his Euro Horse Tour????????

...............Of course I could be wrong, besides who am I?

Subject: Letterman?

Breaking story, perhaps...

Many of you may know that David Letterman is broadcasting from San Francisco the week of 6 May 1996. A friend of mine who works at CBS News in NYC and who is close friends with a couple of people on Letterman's staff says they are trying to get Neil Young for a live appearance. She has fed me advance warning of interesting "surprise" happenings on Letterman in the past (like Dan Rather singing lead with R.E.M. -- she was at the taping) and is usually quite accurate. Anyone know if this is even possible? When do NY's European dates start?

I don't want to start a rumor, so please bear in mind: the word I received was that, as of last week, they were talking to NY's "people" and TRYING to get him for an appearance the week of 6 May. And they probably have a huge list of people they're "trying" to get. The guest list for that week is supposed to have a lot of surprises, as it usually does when they "go on the road." Guest list won't be officially announced till the end of the week of 29 April.

KPIX, the CBS affiliate in SF, has a Letterman section on their web page and an announcement that Letterman will be there, but nothing about guests that week. Nothing about that week's guests on the Late Show homepage, either.

Subject: this summer tour

Hello,

Neil is scheduled to play inside the Roman Coliseum, the first rock concert ever done in the majestic dome, during his next summer tour. A possible opening act is being arranged, with voices spreading about the Customers, the band recently signed by Vapor records. The rumored date is july 1st, with a possible additional date on July 2nd (depending on ticket sales). Tickets are going to be on sale next week, price starting from 150,000 Italian Lire (something less that 100$). Credit cards payment will be welcomed, as a special international green number will be set for the special occasion. Further details will be announced during this week.

Later

(Note from RE*AC*TOR: This turned out to be an "April Fools" joke. I'm leaving it here as an example of how you need to take EVERY rumor with a grain of salt - even if it sounds pretty plausible...)

Subject: Neil concerts in Germany / Summer of 96

Hi all you rusties (especially the European / German ones)

today's issue of German Rolling Stone magazine had an advert of a well known German concert and promotion company on page 25 that said they have planned the following dates and locations for a German tour (no infos about possible backing band, but a Weld-photo, so it might be The Horse?):

22 June Konstanz
23 June Dueren (With ZZTop)
9 July Berlin (Waldbuehne again, wow!)
10 July Leipzig
12 July Munich
13 July Hamburg
14 July Frankfurt

I hope this will really work out in the planned way and I'm looking forward to a hot rocking summer over here in old Germany.

Bye from. . . . .The Gambler. . . . .<Joerg Wartenberg>

Hi.

I got this from the latest NME (published Wed) (UK music paper), though it kind of contradicts the rumours flying around from after the Opal shows...

"... a NY & PJ live album is cheduled for release by Epic. The album, recorded in Dublin last year, has not been given a release date although May has been tentatively suggested. NME understands that there will be no new NY & CH material released before the tour."
So, make of that what you will!

Subject: Joel Bernstein on the Archives from the "Telegraph"

As some of you undoubtedly know, there is a very good Bob Dylan magazine from Britain called the Telegraph. They just set up a new website at: http://bob.nbr.no/telegraph.

Neil content: As part of an article on the DCC remaster of Highway 61, writer John Bauldie talks about a conversation with Joel Bernstein (here reproduced without permission, but I did give the mag a plug):

A few weeks back in a very posh hotel suite over a very nice breakfast, I was chatting to Joel Bernstein - or rather, characteristically, he was chatting at me. Joel's spent most of the last two or three years locked in a recording studio, up to and over his ears in hundreds of reels of Neil Young tapes, experimenting with all sorts of black boxes and different kinds of cabling and interconnects and so on, in a once-and-for-all (or at least for the time being) effort to devise state-of-the-art ways of transforming the sounds on the ancient analogue spools into digitally delightful form, as part of the ongoing Neil Young historically definitive archival project, the labours of which will be put out eventually as some sort of multi-CD compilation.

End quote

Hopefully we will eventually hear the fruits of his labors. I didn't realize--though others probably knew this--that Mr. Bernstein was in charge of these efforts.

Subject: NY @ CH live 3/21/96

Hello,

I was at the 3/21 NY & CH show in Half Moon Bay and it was incredible!!!! I could never imagine NY & CH jamming for over 2 hours only 1-2 feet in front of my face! If I had reached my arm out I would have touched them.It was almost like a dream. A couple of times I had to lean my head back so I would not get hit by Neil's guitar. The capacity of the bar posted over the door was 150 but I would estimate that the crowd was closer to 100. Only 50 tickets went on sale to the public.

The setlist was great. I believe these are the songs he likes and he enjoys playing without having a large paying audience to satisfy. I doubt if these songs are representative of what he will play on tour. A few songs were picked because of the situation of playing in a bar by his home...Country Home, Homegrown,Prisoners of R&R.

Between songs the band members would get together in the middle of the stage and discuss what song to play next. CH really got into Prisoners after Neil sang "...they try to SCREW us and ruin our band..." CITS was over 19 mins long. Neil seemed to really get off slapping the neck of Old Black with his open right hand. Billy was great singing the chorus to Homegrown with that mad determined look he gets on his face.

He played songs I thought I would never get to see him play. The songs were almost the same each night but in different order.

It's been 4 days since the show and I still cannot believe it happened. It must have been just a beautiful dream.

Rust,

Okay, so I hear the secret is out. I'll give a full report on the show I saw when I get the opportunity to write it up.

The sound sucks out front but is a little better in the coffee house (that's where I spent Monday night).

Neil got a haircut, appeared to be in good health, smiled a lot, appeared to be having a good time, didn't talk to the crowd at all :-(, and played and sang really well. He sang Stupid Girl "high", and Barstool Blues 'low' (they did it D-C-G). Down by the River was 25 minutes monday night, but much shorter on Tuesday. It appeared that Neil would play longer but some drunk guy pushed his way to the front and was acting somewhat belligerent during the last couple of songs and that's when Neil appeared to cut it short.

The bar folks and security were pretty friendly, though one guy was beaten up pretty badly for trying to sneak in the back of the bar (so I heard...)

As far as I know, *nobody* taped the show (except probably Neil...). Hope I'm wrong - that was the best I've ever heard crazy horse sound.

Subject: Stealth Neil Shows

How come no one on here has been talking about Neil's gigs this week? He's been playing with Crazy Horse in a tiny club on the SF peninsula Monday through Thursday. Old Princeton Landing in Princeton CA about 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay. The place holds about 150 people and tickets are essentially impossible to acquire. They have been playing 3 to 4 hours (8:30 - midnight). You can not get in but my buddy Dave hung out front (clear/close view, muddy sound) for awhile last night, and there's an adjacent coffee shop (no view, but better sound) which is worth checking out. He said they opened with Country Home and also played Hoemgrown. No further details from my end. Does anyone have any info to add? 'Tell me more, tell me more...' Someone must know.

peace, further...eric. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mr Soul

Subject: setlist from 3/19 NY & CH show @ OPL

What a show! I was right in front of Pancho - 2 ft from his mike, in the "spit zone". Neil was just a couple more feet away. What a trip! Now I'm spoiled and unless I get to sit in Neil's lap, I'll never be able to match the magic of this show.

The place only holds 150 people, so it wasn't even that crowded. The waitress brought me a beer, to the front row, during the first set.

This setlist is from memory, I'll repost later if I got it wrong (I left the list at home this morning...)

Set I

  • Country Home
  • Stupid Girl
  • Bite the Bullet
(Neil and CH were conferring on stage. I yelled out, "Bite the Bullet, Bite the Bullet", and Neil looks over, and says, "Yeah, let's do Bite the Bullet..." Unbelievable).
  • Barstool Blues
  • Wonderin' (another request that was granted!)
  • Drive Back

    Set II

  • The Losing End
  • Danger Bird
  • Like a Hurricane
  • Prisoners of Rock N Roll
  • Baby What Do You Wan't Me To Do? (old blues song)
  • Roll Another Number

    Set III

  • The Old Country Waltz
  • Down By the River
  • Don't Cry No Tears
  • Powderfinger

I also yelled for Rapid Transit, but Neil looked over and said, "um, we don't do that one".

The only differences from Monday night were that they dropped Homegrown and When Your Lonely Heart Breaks, and added Hurricane, Old Country Waltz, Don't Cry No Tears, and Powderfinger.

Monday started at 9 and went until about 12, Tuesday went from 9 to 12:30. What a show!!!!!!
