Subject: New CSNY recording

Hi Rusties and Shorliners-

It may be of interest to y'all that there have been some rumors this year of yet another CSNY collaboration. Details are sketchy, but seem to stem from a NY interview in the German magazine FOCUS.

Broken Arrow, the NYAS quarterly, mentions this as well as a Nash quote about "talking with Neil" and "stuff in the pipeline".....

I'm wondering if any of you have actually seen the FOCUS interview or can shed some more light on this. The rumor, as I understand it is that CSNY will make an album of traditional Christmas songs......

My personal opinion is that this rumor is so far down the rumor evolutionary chain that it's probably not even worth mentioning, but far be it for me to withhold non-info.....

sorry if this has been posted before

Subject: OPL CANCELLED

OPL tonight is cancelled, so last night's show was the final one. Refunds are being given and the equipment is being loaded out. My friend told me the cancellation may have been because Neil was given a DAT of one of the shows last week and didn't take kindly to it....

I have a friend who works sound for Metallica who called me from San Fran Saturday night saying he was working two Neil Young shows at OPL on Monday and Tuesday night. I can't make it, but I thought I'd share the rumor. My last rumor was incorrect, so please check it out for yourself before driving there.

Subject: NEIL & ME - SPRING 97 WITH UPDATES!!!

Reading Rusties!

Good news!!!!!

I just got off the phone with the publisher of Scott Young's book, Neil and Me, and it is on schedule to be republished Spring 97 with updates. According to the publisher, Scott is working on additional material right now.

And to cap it off, she thanked us and said it was our prompting and obvious support for this book that is bringing it back. Thanks again to all the rusties who emailed me saying they'd buy the book. I guess those mega-page faxes did the trick.

So, rusties, pat yourselves on the back, save up your pennies and buy the book when it comes out. For all you rusties too young to have bought this book the first time around (it's been out of print a long time) you're in for a treat. Scott is a great writer (sports columnist, author of loads of books) and this is his son he's writing about. There's no other book quite like it.

Which leads me to wonder whether pappa Scott has been with Neil during this last while. Anyone seen him at OPL or Catalyst? If you see a tall, handsome guy, who looks a lot like Neil (OK vice versa I suppose) and is about 75 years old, that's Scott.

First Vapor, now the publishers. Reprise, are you listening? Where are the archives??

Subject: OPL June 4 - Neil Debuts Broken Arrow

I don't have much time to detail it all, but Neil finally debuted all of the songs from the new album last night at the OPL. The new songs were a little rough around the edges, but good none the less. He did all of Set 1 with Jim Jarmusch filming. I'm not sure if the other sets were filmed. This was by far the most diverse of the clubs shows I've seen.

Here're the songs from the marathon show that ended at about 1:45.

Set 1

Set 2 Set 3 All of the new songs were played electric with Big Time, Slip Away (particularily the second version) and Music Arcade!! being my favorites. We got great renditions Of Prisoners, RITFW, and Hurricane, along with the welcome addition of Sedan Delivery. The third set was excellant the entire way through.

Subject: Catalyst Update...

Here is the latest from the rumour mill. My SO called the Catalyst today and spoke with an executive. The exec was very helpful and had heard of the RUST List. He said the following:

"Neil's people have been in contact with a promoter who has been in contact with us. They wanted to know which dates we had open. We listed the dates and also told them that we would pretty much clear any date if Neil wanted to play. As for tonight, you can be fairly certain that there will be no show, because Neil has not confirmed. Usually, the way it works is...they (Neil's people) will confirm the day before a show and we will then list it on the recorded message the day before at 8:30am. Tell the people on RUST who are interested to check the message daily to see if a show will be happening this week. So far, there has not been a confirmation."
So, there it is. Nothing yet, but I will try to pass along information as I hear it.

Hi everyone!

No sign of Neil & Co. this morning at OPL. The woman at the coffee shop next door seemed doubtful that they'd be returning, but said it "may change".

She's heard that everyone's heading off to Europe on June 10, giving us about a week left to chase the Horse.....

A Rustie/Lurker friend of mine went out to OPL last night...and found out that there was no show. He said that there were a few people hanging around that had also heard a rumour that Neil would be there, but alas...

Update from the Rumour Mill:

OPL - Apparently, Neil was supposed to play the OPL on Tues, Weds, & Thurs of this week but that one of band members had gotten sick. According to a source at OPL, Neil has not rescheduled (as of today).
Catalyst - Rumour has it that Neil's people HAVE been in contact with the Catalyst and that something may be happening next week.

Subject: Made In Canada - I spoke too soon

A couple of days ago, I posted my thoughts on the new Randy Bachman song Made In Canada, which features Neil on guitar and vocals. Having heard the 4-minute radio edit, I said it wasn't really all that great. Well, last night I caught the last 2 or 3 minutes of the full-length version, and let me tell you, Neil was smokin'! It was just about the most intense and frenzied guitar playing I've ever heard from him...you're going to be blown away when you hear this thing! I'm still not too impressed by the song's melody, but Neil's guitar playing takes the song to a whole other realm.

Just caught my 5th of Neil's 12 stealth shows. Nothing like having a R+R Hall of Famer living in the area. Folks in Europe can expect new song performances and extended Barstool Blues versions not to mention some fiery playing in general. Obviously these tiny gigs are something special ( judging from number of family and friends in attendance) but I think the intensity will continue. Best stealth gigs:

Subject: Made In Canada

Last night, one of the radio stations here previewed Randy Bachman's song Made In Canada from his forthcoming album, Merge. Neil plays electric guitar and sings on the 10-minute track, but all I got to hear was the radio edit, which is about 4 minutes. So what is it like? Well, it's an upbeat songs, heavy on the guitars, though not quite 'grungey'. Unfortunately, the melody is about as creative as Takin' Care Of Business (make of that what you will). Neil's guitar is prominent during most of the song, and his solo at the end is pretty intense. Neil and Bachman alternate singing the chorus, which is basically just "made in Canada" repeated several times.

I couldn't make out all the lyrics, but I think the song chronicles the difficulties of being a musician in Canada (with all the obligatory references to 'prairies' and 'cold' and such). So what's my verdict? Well, I'm sure it'll do well in Canada (given the song's title), but I'd be surprised if it became a hit anywhere else (or is even played anywhere else). I'm sure the full-length version is better, but after 4 or 5 listenings, what I heard didn't strike me as all that great.

Subject: Last Night's Show

Well, Neil did play last night and the show was great. We got to see the live world premiere of Big Time, an instant epic classic; all 15 minutes of it. The rest of the show was a mixture of songs that have been played at previous shows during this club tour.

Neil played two sets, 55 & 75 minutes. The show didn't start until 11:00 because his plane was late from Hawaii.

In addition to Big Time, he played an excellent Barstool Blues and Dangerbird. This show was much more magical then the recent Catalyst shows. I'll let some of the other Rusties I saw there fill in the cracks.

Here's a message from a friend of mine "in the biz" concerning the aborted Catalyst shows this week:

So, no show last night--apparently last week Poncho had a sore throat and Neil was in Hawaii up until Sunday night and the show was not given the nod. ...a friend who heard an interview with Neil recently where Neil was expressing his fascination with taping and bootlegging and he wasn't down on it --- just kind of amazed that everything he does gets circulated either through traders or bootleg CD pirates and he said semi-humorously that his new goal was to play a show which doesn't get taped...

Here's a little info about the new Broken Arrow CD.

Neil wants to use a hard to read text for the Broken Arrow CD. It's made up of little animals and figures that sort of spell out Broken Arrow.

Anyone care to guess what animal and figures these are?

My guess is: buffalo, indians, grey riders, and maybe a couple of guitars. I'd like to see a gator. :)
