early report by Jeff Change-Your-Mind Steinhardt
Wheeeeew... Just made it back to Milwaukee
(2:30am) after having seen Neil in Chicago! Excellent
show, same set list as Toronto 2 days earlier, crowd
of about 15,000, T-shirts priced $32 - $48,
yadayadayada...!
Stopped by Garbones for the Rust gathering - sat at the long stretch
table out back on the porch talking Neil with Irwin Gaines, Joe Stypien
& his sister, Chuck King, etc. People there from Oklahoma, Michigan,
Minnesota, Milwaukee - alot of fun putting faces with names!
Observations on the show:
- I am deeply in love with Astrid Young! What a beauty!!!
- Pegi has a nice voice and held her own - sounded
great during her part in Motorcycle Mama.
- Words and Cowgirl In The Sand were obvious
highlights, clocking in at 14+ and 18+ minutes respectivley!
- Good crowd - stood when they should, sat when they
should. Brief fight broke out in Section 103 between a
40ish man picking a fight with a 18ish boy who refused
to sit. Some solid punches were landed but security
stepped in and handled it well.
- Dragged just a bit for me during the string of
acoustic tunes - Unknown Legend, BSA, Razor Love and
FHTH. Just my opinion...
- LOVED hearing the string of early seventies rockers
-- Walk On, Winterlong, BFOL and Words.
- Tonight's The Night had a totally erie, surealistic
feel to it. VERY DEEP bass, Neil noodling on piano,
red & blue house lights -- very funky!
- Majority of crowd seemed somewhat disappointed by
the fact that he didn't play his biggest hits - RITFW,
Old Man, HOG, etc. The true diehards, though, truly
appreciated the Stray Gatorish set.
Well, time to roll another number with my official
Neil Young Music In Head rolling papers,
that I picked up at the show for $5. And drift off to sleep.
See you all at the Ale House tonight in Milwaukee.
PS: I only counted 3 "How Ya Doin'?"s.
