My wife and I saw Neil and the Horse at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta, and it was a powerful show on many levels. Neil looked really spiffy in baggy shorts with black Nike swoosh socks. Endorsement money there?? :) The energy and decibel level were really incredible. Some songs you felt more in your gut than in your ears. At one point my wife said she felt the whole row of seats shaking.

Anyway I have been waiting to see Neil since 1970, when I was 14 and my parents wouldn't let me go. I had tickets to see him in 1987 (with the "Garage Band"), but they had to cancel at the last moment. I've seen him now -- and it was great...

The concert last night ended in a really neat way. The stage was mostly bare except for instruments and REALLY big amps and speakers. Just before Neil came on, the road crew lit a bunch of candles on the stage that burned throughout the concert and provided a great sense of ambiance or atmosphere for an outdoor concert. Well, during Like a Hurricane Neil went on a real feedback orgy, shaking his guitar and making it squawk on and on. After ten minutes of this, he handed Old Black to the instuments man-- and it just kept squawking... Then Neil climbed up on a speaker, retrieved a candle, held it up to the crowd and blew it out. And walked off stage. Really touching.

All the Rusties who attended are in hospitals awaiting skin grafts to replace what Neil & Crazy Horse SCORCHED off our bodies.

What a GREAT show!

Almost identical to Charlotte - My memory and quotes may be slightly askew:

  1. Hey, Hey, My My

    Okay, not much fire.

  2. Pocahontas

    Wonderfully adapted to electric :)

  3. Big Time

Sparks & indications of a great show to come.

  4. Slip Away

    Whoa! Great JAM. Psychodelic...

  5. The Needle and the Damage Done

He played it like it was fresh. That was nice. He started the song but had some kind of tech prob. When he was ready to go again he said, "Guess what song I am going to play?"

  6. Heart of Gold

Nice to hear. Crowd cheered everytime he sang, "Old Man, look at my life". After song, Neil said, "That song can't be about me".

  7. Sugar Mountain

Good harmonica solos. Nobody on the lawn seemed to be paying attention. A lot of conversation which distracted me.

  8. Cinnamon Girl

    Powerful & Rock solid.

  9. Fuckin' Up

AHHH! What a Jam at the end. I can see why many Dead Fans like Neil. This was the best song of the night, for me - which surprised me because I don't care for this song. But it COOKED!

  10. Cortez The Killer

ZZZZzzzzz... (Sorry, I know that is heresy.)

  11. Music Arcade

The lawn seating chit chat picked up but I could see some "lil' dudes" being won over. Very Nice, I'm glad he played it.

  12. Like a Hurricane

Another SMOKER! I am amazed that they can play this so much and not be bored. The interplay amongst them was terrific. 2nd best of the night in my mind.

  13. This Town

The Horse was on a Roll...

  14. Sedan Delivery

Third best of night, with Great Rave up.

  15. Roll Another Number for the Road

The lawn crowd was visibly dissappointed that this wasn't RITFW. I couldn't get the song out of my head till Sunday PM. Well done. I loved his PRECISE solo....very unusual for Neil.

This was the second Time I have seen Neil. It was much better than the Booker T show.

IMHO.

Hello world... just got back from the concert and am winding down, thought I'd toss out some thoughts. This was my first Neil concert and really the first concert I've ever gone to with high expectations. And wow, I had the time of my life. Sat back on the lawn, saw one MORE BARN t-shirt, but he escaped down into the seats before I had a chance to say Hi, oh well. (My MORE BARN shirt disappeared into the ethereal blur that is my room)

So we went, we listened, we danced, we smiled. We were kind of disappointed in not hearing RITFW, but Z-93 played it just after the show so all was wonderful. I did think the show was a little on the short side, but I was struck by how much he enjoyed being up there and playing. I loved Cortez and Hurricane, and realized that, while I'd love to hear some less heard songs, I would have been very disappointed not to hear Hurricane or Hey Hey, My My.

Anyways, was a wonderful show and all I really want to do right now is see another one. :-) Oh well, 'tis not to be...

cheers,

ONWARD TO THE CONCERT - My wife and I went down to the venue in time to check out the shirts, etc before the show - spent entirely too much money there. They had some nice, but overpriced merchandise.

Ben Folds Five played first - I had bought their disc in prep for this show, but enjoyed them live even less than I did their recording. The most notable thing about them was that there were only 3 of them.

Jewel - was much stronger and more rocking than I expected. I'd never seen her, but absolutely love her disc. She had a fantastic strong voice that really hit the spot.wouldn't mind seeing her again.

Neil - what can I say - I loved him. Some sound problems in the beginning, but he made up for it with some really hot songs. Electric Pocahontas that was wonderful. I think Sedan Delivery was my favorite of the evening - though it's really hard to put a best title on it. Slip Away cooked - the jam at the end blew away what he has on the album - Neil's guitar was heard and heard well. Fuckin Up was really hot ("I'm just a fuck up"), as was Like a Hurricane (song didn't end til Neil broke all his strings).

Neil didn't talk a lot, commented on the humidity - don't really think he was quite as into it as he was in Charlotte (from the reports given), but still sounded pretty good to me. Unfortunately the show ended in a bit of a downer (for me anyway), when at the end of Roll Another Number some dickhead threw something on stage and Neil sort of ducked and looked pissed. He was about to go into another number (Powderfinger?) but instead raised his guitar up and broke all the strings and left stage.

It was my fifth time to see Neil (well, to be honest i only really remember 4 - one was a bit overcooked and all I can remember is patchy and foggy), and though it wasn't the best of those performances, it still left me totally happy to have been there and wanting to come back for more. I took a roll of film at the show but doubt they'll turn out that great since the stage was fairly dark and all backlit. If any of them are decent, i'll have them scanned
