Here's an interesting story for y'all...
A friend of mine (Mark) was in SF 'round Thanksgivingtime with his wife. One night they dined in a restaurant at which the cast of Nash Bridges (Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, et al.) arrived for some chow. But my fine friend also experienced another brush with the rich and famous...
While his wife was shopping one day (at Nordstrom's, I think he said), he stepped into a nearby bar (the name of which escapes me now) for a nice cold beverage. On the bar were placed 4 cold ones, and seated in front of those cold ones were the Fearsome Foursome of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
My friend bellied up to the bar with a bit more enthusiasm than usual, I imagine. After the gang of 4 quaffed their brews, they stepped up onto the stage, and one of them prefaced the ensuing jam with a statement to this effect: "We hope you don't mind, but we'd like to practice a little". Mark was delirious, and enjoyed the rehearsal mucho. Unfortunately his story is the only documentation we have of this encounter.
I know I stood in wide-eyed rapture when Mark told me the story, and later on I wondered about his penchant for "exaggeration". However, he is a CSN devotee, and he's seen them countless times in concert, so he knows who the dudes are.

Add Ottawa to the list of CSNY2K rumours... Two of my friends (slight Neil fans) mentioned it to me tonight... I'm about to check out the paper... just down and up the stairs... nope, nothing in Monday's paper... it's too cold to go outside to try to find Tuesday's... nothing on the net... I'll try to find out more... but, if it's true, you heard it here first...

Subject: Will Neil Be There?
The last few days in the Tacoma news Tribune there's been a quarter page add for the Sacred Lands Benefit concert,on December the 11th. 5 shows at the Emerald Queen Casino (owned by the Puyallup Indian Tribe) with Roger Fisher, Ambrosia, Pablo Cruise, Williams and Rae(?), Pointer Sisters, Firefall, Howie Mandel, Grown Men(?), Paul Rogers, Black Lodge(?).
I'm usually in the know about the scene in Tacoma but this came together quick. I hadn't heard anything about it, even though I do some work at the E.Q. But my guitar teacher tells me that he had heard that Neil was approached and that he might be comming up...
The line on the advertisement reads: "Join Paul Allen, Woody Harrelson, Uma Thurman, Howie Mandel and other celebrities to support the scared lands. All procedes to benifit the project to save the sacred lands."

Subject: Extensive CSNY Article
The longest version of the recent San Francisco interviews that I've seen is on the Gavin Report web site. It includes a lot of talk about the tour (including philosophy of ticket pricing).
It includes this exchange (about what'll be played on the tour):
YOUNG: We've got old songs we can do. We'll pick some of them out, but we'll be doing new songs. We're going to try to do the ones we believe in today and try not to do Las Vegas versions, twice as fast, skipping through them.RE*AC*TORSTILLS: Having listened to the all of our Buffalo Springfield records, that's impossible (laughs).
YOUNG: Okay, twice as slow.
STILLS: God almighty.
YOUNG:The All Insect Orchestra.
NASH: There's a great album title.
There's a long article, mostly talking to Graham Nash, in the Toronto Sun. Interesting notes are:
Okay, I admit it. I faxed for Nashville VIP seats just before the on-sale, after another Rustie deal had fallen though. Hours from Nashville, I figured this was the best way to get great seats (I don't care a whit about the VIP stuff they offer, though) without chancing it on getting through to TM. And I wanted to see as early a show in the tour as possible, in case, ahem, somebody bolts.
My tickets just arrived in the mail, along with a letter:
Dear Sir/Madam:YEEEAAAAAA!!!On behalf of Gaylord Entertainment Center, I would like to thank you for your ticket order to the CSNY concert on March 9, 2000.
Regrettably, the V.I.P. party has been cancelled for lack of interest. Your ticket price has been lowered to the regular price rather than the V.I.P. package price. Blah, blah....
Looking forward to partying with VIP Rusties...

Though Ticketbastard, Pollstar and the Delta Center's web site all still list the CSNY2K show in Salt Lake City for January 29, the CSNY "official" site has removed it from their tour list. Since the "official" site has been pretty fastidious about updating that web page, this removal has to be looked at as possibly not just being an accident...

According to Launch.com:
After a brief break, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young returned to rehearsing in earnest for their CSNY2K tour, which kicks off Jan. 24 in suburban Detroit. Graham Nash said that the four musicians have been discussing the set lists, which will include lots of material from the new Looking Forward album, as well as older favorites, songs that didn't make the album and even some material that hasn't been recorded yet.There will also be selections from the quartet's previous bands - Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds and the Hollies. "We're thinking about that right now," Nash said. "Of the Springfield stuff, we definitely want to do things like Bluebird. I asked Neil if he would do Expecting To Fly, which is one of my all-time favorites. Uno Mundo would be a great thing to revive from the Springfield. David, I believe, wants to do Chimes of Freedom and I'm thinking about Hollies stuff."

Subject: Will Neil be there?
Since the first of these is in Neil's neck of the woods and since Emmylou just helped out Neil, passing this on...
Emmylou Harris to lead Calif. charity showsNASHVILLE (Billboard) - Emmylou Harris will do five special concerts in California in early December to benefit the Campaign for a Landmine Free World. Harris will be joined on stage by special guests who will perform their songs in spare, acoustic settings, like a guitar pull in a Nashville living room.
Steve Earle will join Harris for all five concerts. Other guests will include Bruce Cockburn, Nanci Griffith, John Prine, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson, among others. Harris did a series of concerts for the landmine cause last year and she has toured hospitals in Vietnam and Cambodia to see first hand the damage caused by these long-forgotten weapons.
Concerts will take place:
- Dec. 1 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.;
- Dec. 2 at Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa, Calif.;
- Dec. 3 at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif.;
- Dec. 4 at the University of California San Diego;
- Dec. 5 at the University of California Santa Barbara.
According the Launch.com:
David Crosby, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills and Neil Young were slated to convene Wednesday in Northern California to begin rehearsals for the three-month CSNY2K tour which kicks off Jan. 24 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit.The quartet - along with sidemen Duck Dunn on bass, Joe Vitale on drums and Michael Finnigan on keyboards - has been sifting through its substantial repertoire of material to decide what to play during the shows. "The only thing that we've decided so far is that we want to play every song from the new record," Nash said. "And then we want to play a selection of songs that our fans know and love us for. As long as we can make them musically interesting and make them not a medley and not a Las Vegas-type rendition of it, we're gonna choose songs that we still mean."
CSNY is slated to hold production rehearsals in Cleveland before the tour since there are too many conflicts with the NBA's Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Subject: CSNY2K Songs
This morning's USA Today features CSN&Y as the cover story of the Life Section.
Good news for those of you looking for additional CSN&Y material... While discussing the songs that will be sung on the upcoming tour, Young suggests that CSN&Y might dip into the Buffalo Springfield vault for some songs. However, he also goes on to caution that "....the thing that happens when bands redo their hits is that pretty soon it's a Las Vegas thing.... We won't be doing medleys. And we've got new material, newer than what's on the album. So we're not going to rest on the past, though we'll give it a healthy nod."
(For those of you who are veterans of Neil's '99 solo tour stops in Las Vegas, he may not have gotten the memory of those shows completely out of his mind!).

Subject: What can they play?
I was at the Stockholm CS_Y press conference on Tuesday, representing Finnish rock magazine Soundi. I had to write my article right away so I couldn´t post anything, but here´s an interesting bit to all of you wondering what CSNY will be playing next year:
Q: Will you play songs that you´ve never played together before or is it just familiar stuff?It'd be strange if they´ve already promised to come to Italy. In Stockholm, Crosby said that nothing is fixed yet. That they´ll see what happens in the US tour first, and then decide what they´ll do.Crosby: We´ll probably do stuff from just about every possible source. It´s my hope that we´ll do most if not all of the new record, cause it´s really wonderful stuff to play. We´ll probably write things while we´re getting together and rehearsing, and play those -- things that haven´t been recorded and you haven´t even heard yet. I´m sure, because I´m gonna beat somebody up if we don´t do it. That we´ll play some Buffalo Springfield songs that I wanna play real badly.
Stills: There´s a couple of Neil Young solo songs that I want my hands on.
Crosby: I think somebody counted that between us, the four of us have something like 900 songs. Now, admittedly 400 of those are Neil´s... We have a lot of songs, we probably have about 200 songs that we could play together. Hopefully we´ll rehearse as many as we possibly can so that we can do a lot of switching out as we go along. Cause that would be the the healthiest and most adventuresome and most fun.

Here are a few news items, rumors and head's-ups that I have come across over recent days. Some have already been posted here, but I'm compiling them here for convenience....
Access to good seats by us "regular peons" seems to be eroding more and more. It's not bad enough that it takes $200+ (or even $300+ for those "superfan" packages) to get anywhere near the stage. Now they're giving out "VIP passwords" to some special class of people so that they can buy up tickets before they even go on sale to the "general public". For example, check out what's going on right now for the Minneapolis CSNY2K show.
I wonder how many of the other CSNY2K shows have this secret way to

This morning there's an actual interview in the San Francisco Chronicle with CSNY. It was done this past Thursday and mostly covers the new album but mentions the tour. The print version has a photo of the 4 sitting around a table with Neil and Crosby playing guitars.
Here's a web version (no picture, unfortunately).

Subject: CSNY in Hartford
Yesterday on WPLR 99.1 in New Haven, Jimmy Koplic, our major concert promoter for the area, and who has a weekly "call in and ask about it show" with radio personality Mike Lapitino, spilled the beans. He says that CSN&Y are scheduled to appear at the Hartford Civic Center on April 12, 2000.
Actually he didn't say it exactly that way... He answered a listener's question about a CSN&Y appearance in the area as being in April, saying that they would make an announcement this coming Tuesday. Pushed by Lapitino to reveal the date, Koplic said that he thought that it would be on the date that is the age of Lapitino's oldest daughter. Lapitino said the 13th? Koplic replied, "Let's just say she's a year younger." So if my math is good, that puts the date at the 12th. We'll see what the poop is on Tuesday.
Respectfully submitted,

Despite what the Shoreline Amphitheater calendar page says, it is for sure there will be no CSN&Y at the Bridge benefits. It's been canceled for sure, according to CSN's manager G.Tolman, to whom I talked this week.

A company here in England is advertising a trip from the UK to see CSNY in New York for a show on April 11th, presumably at Madison Square Garden. It's a company called Event Travel, based in Cambridge, England.
The woman I spoke to had scant details - they were still fixing a price for the package, but had apparently had news from a New York promoter. At the moment, their website has NO information on the show they are advertising in the press.
Kind regards,
Mark Golley.
