Subject: Great Woods: New Start Time!!

Attention Aug 8th and Aug 9th HORDE ticket holders:

I just talked to Great Woods about the HORDE start time because apparently there is some conflicting information going around about the time the doors open and about showtime.

As you know, our tickets say 4:00 PM and it was previously announced that the doors would open at 3:00 PM. As of a few minutes ago, the word is that doors open at 2:00 PM and "official" music starts at 3:40 PM. I do not know what "official" means, but I like to think it acknowledges Neil's "unofficial" acoustic set when the doors open. The woman I talked to at GW just now couldn't tell me exactly what "official" meant. "I guess that means the main stage" is what she said. So it's anybody's guess. But that's the story. Gates open at 2:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, and we know Neil's acoustic sets so far have mostly been right after the doors open.

Subject: Photo gallery of Neil at Pine Knob

Rusties,
Black's Camera here in Canada has a new service where they will put your shots on the web and allow you to download fairly high quality JPEGs. So I brought a couple of those disposable cameras with me to Pine Knob, and now the shots are on the web.

There are shots of Neil playing his mini-set, Neil and the trains, the Banners, Barb with Ralph Molina, and assorted rusties hanging out and having fun. Computer Cowboy also took one of my cameras backstage and shot Neil during the evening set. A bit dark, but pretty dramatic.

You can download these shots free. Use em for whatever you like. Put em on your Web pages, use em for tape JCards etc. Go to http://blacks.photonet.com and enter name "strote", and the code for roll one: "BPC4717521", or for roll two: "BPC6991661". The shots are up there for 30 days, so get em while they're hot. Hope you like em. Have fun.

Subject: Taping is OK at Great Woods!

There has been some confusion as to whether Great Woods was aware that taping is allowed at HORDE shows. We want to avoid a situation where taping is OK with HORDE but the venue ticket-takers and ushers do not seem to know this and give tapers a hard time at the gates and at their seats. I understand that this has happened at a couple of HORDE shows so far.

I have been trying to resolve this question for the Aug. 9th show, and now that I have the answer, I thought I would post it so that Aug. 8th Great Woods show folks would see it as well.

This is directly from my connection at Great Woods:

Taping will be allowed, and although it's not entirely settled yet, it is unlikely that there will be a special tapers area set up.

Subject: Neil on WBCN

Neil was interviewed on WBCN Boston yesterday at about 4:00pm. His voice was REALLY low and he said it always gets like this after a few days of singing but that he could feel it coming back up higher. He also said the opening acoustic shows depend on how many shows in a row he's done and how his voice is doing.

He was really in good spirits and said he's loving this HORDE tour.

The beginning was funny: at first Neil was on for a few seconds before his cellular phone cut out. Then Elliot called the station saying Neil was going to a different phone but it would be a while. So to kill time, the DJ interviewed Elliot, who proved to be a very funny, intelligent guy.

Subject: Great Woods 2 (Aug 9) update

I just got off the phone with Great Woods. A couple of people have mentioned that report I posted telling of poor ticket sales for this show and wondered if it's really going to happen. I asked Paul about this today.

First off, he said that tickets are selling steadily though they don't expect to sell nearly as many as they have for the Aug 8th show (11,000 last time I heard). Then he said he did hear some vague discussion of this possibility around the office last Friday. Seems like a lot depends on this week's ticket sales. He told me to wait until Monday (the 21st) because any decision to cancel would have to be made by then.

I'll keep you all posted...

Subject: Neil's coming to Texas!!!!!!

Excerpts from an article in this morning's Dallas Morning News:

"A grain gesture from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been accepted by Farm Aid founder Willie Nelson. At Jones invitation, the famed country singer's 11th concert benefiting family farmers will be held Saturday, Oct. 4th, in Texas Stadium, The Nashville Network announced Friday. TNN will broadcast the event live from 5 to 11 pm."

"Nelson's partners in Farm Aid, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, will perform at the concert. Other talent and ticket information is to be announced later by the Farm Aid organization."

The article explains that Jerry Jones is offering the use of Texas Stadium rent-free and has also rearranged the Cowboys' schedule so that they will not have a home game that weekend.

So Neil is coming to Texas for the first time since 1993, I've never seen Willie Nelson live, and the concert will be in October when temperatures will be under 100 degrees! Barring any knife accidents by Neil, I will be able to see him shortly after the HORDE tour is over!!!!!

Subject: Neil at Portland

The KMTT 103.7 fm radio station in Seattle announced that Neil called them today and let them know his finger is fine. They said that he said he would do an acoustic solo set early in the afternoon, then the final set with Crazy Horse at night.

For the WEB enabled there is an archived audio of the Neil Young phone conversation. This is the site:

A revelation: The sliced finger was NOT caused by a HAM sandwich it was "a piece of crap turkey meat product."

Very pumped up !!

Hey, here's a nice bit of news (if it turns out to be true): KFOG just announced that Neil has just called them up to tell them to tell us that NY&CH will play 2 sets at this Friday's HORDE opener (at Shoreline) and Neil will also play an acoustic set (perhaps solo?).

I heard it from someone else, but here's hoping for maximum Neil soon!!!

Incredible! I met Elliot Roberts in Turin (Italy)! It happened backstage at the David Byrne concert on July 1st. (Lookout also manages Byrne.) We talked a little about Neil. (He confirmed that the finger injury is truth.)

The big news is that they are trying to re-schedule the NY & CH European tour for November '97... (Indoor gigs, obviously.)

Let's see what will happen... (Please, everybody keep your fingers crossed!)

Subject: Neil coming to Oz?

This appeared on the Australian Immedia music news page and in several music-related street papers in Australia today. The author is Christie Eliezer:

YOUNG ON HIS WAY
Neil Young heads back to Australia for his third tour, either later this year or early next. Young's manager Elliott Roberts added it would be with Frontier. "If we toured down there with anyone else, Michael (Gudinski) would kick my ass!" Young, Roberts and Crazy Horse guitarist Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro were talking to Paul Cashmere, executive producer of Aussie-based international CD-ROM magazine Undercover, near Neil's ranch in Woodside, California. Sampedro also asked for regards to be sent to Richard Clapton, whom they nicknamed 'Ralph'.
Explanatory notes: Frontier is Australia's largest booker of US acts. Michael Gudinski is a principal in it and the founder of a large label (Mushroom) in Australia. Richard Clapton was a successful singer-songwriter, now reduced to comparative obscurity.

Eliezer is generally reliable, but perhaps Lookout Mama could check this out, in view of recent denials of any Australian tour plans and the ham sandwich accident/European dates cancellations?

Subject: Jones Beach Show CANCELLED?

Before everyone panics, I JUST got off the phone with Lookout, and they told me that there is a show, they even checked the latest itinerary, that says Aug 12th, Jones Beach. No one knows why tickets aren't on sale yet.

I called the promoter and was told "There never was a show, so we had no show to cancel." Which has been their trip all along.

I'll believe Lookout before I believe a promoter any day (being a sound engineer and all).

Subject: Neil @ Glastonbury ?

I was checking out one of the many Glastonbury sites (last updated June 18th), and it says the following:

"Sting is playing, in the slot originally set aside for Neil Young (more of him later)."
It then goes on to say:
"Neil Young, after a lot of on and off rumours, is definitely playing, not on the main stage, but The Select stage (which used to be the N.M.E. stage) on Sunday night."
Anyone heard anything about this ? I think it's quite possible that he could play....his finger has probably healed by now.
